Hi, I’m Penny, the mom behind Declutter in Real Life.
I’ve always liked to organize things, even as a child. But that didn’t prepare me to deal with the clutter that comes with being an adult.
Getting married, working, buying a small house, running a home business, having a baby, homeschooling, and moving a couple of times each presented new challenges and stretched my decluttering skills to the limit.
For years I attempted to just organize it all, since that was what I was good at, not realizing this is a common mistake.
Now we were living with very tidy clutter, but still clutter. Clearly there was more I needed to learn.
So my decluttering journey included:
❌ Stringing together tips I found online (which helped, but left me missing out on important fundamentals that would have saved me a lot of unnecessary wasted time and energy)
❌ Setting aside hours or even a day dedicated to decluttering, thinking I needed this to get results (which rarely happened and when it did I never got as much done as I thought I would)
❌ Following a popular method (which felt way too complicated and hurt my brain)
❌ Getting sidetracked before even getting started (with decisions about what to do first or what to do next)
❌ Becoming overwhelmed with decluttering information (it’s way too easy to spend time watching videos, downloading freebies, joining groups, and reading blog posts).
❌ Taking lots of action but not seeing lasting progress (even though I was following good advice, it didn’t fit my lifestyle).
✔ Clutter slowly but surely disappeared and stayed away
✔ I made consistent progress even with limited time and energy
✔ My home functioned better and felt more relaxed
✔ As I took control, my confidence grew and my decision making skills sharpened
✔ The skills and positive habits I gained started spilling over into other areas too
We need to be flexible, but a little bit of structure helps us stay on track. The Weekly Declutter lets you relax and follow along, knowing you’ll get something good done every week.

Q. How much time will this take?
Reading The Weekly Declutter and completing the worksheet takes all of about 10 minutes. The rest of your time is spent on the decluttering project. We suggest about 5 blocks of 15 minutes throughout the week, but you can adjust that as you like.
Q. Do I need to have Facebook?
No. Our Facebook group is available if you want to ask questions or to connect with other members, but you can definitely follow the program and get results without it.
Q. What if I fall behind with the weekly projects?
First of all, don’t feel pressure to “catch up” because that’s just not a thing here. Jump back in with the current project then work on the ones you missed when you can.
Q. Can I get The Weekly Declutter a few weeks ahead?
This option isn’t available because one of the main goals of the membership is to make steady progress by focusing on one thing at a time.
Q. Can I do more than 1 hour per week?
Of course! If you find yourself with extra time or motivation, please take advantage of it. But make The Weekly Declutter your first priority. Then spend additional time taking it further or branching out to something else.
Q. Does it cover every room in my house?
Over the course of a year, The Weekly Declutter focuses on 52 different areas and types of clutter throughout your entire home. The projects are timed to coordinate with seasonal and lifestyle considerations each month.
